Puckington
PUCKINGTON CHURCH is a fine little building, perhaps dating from the 13th century, with a 15th century tower and probably substantially restored in the 19th century. It stands well back from the main road in what is largely a very ancient (and now rare), circular graveyard: this was typical of Celtic religious sites and so it is reasonable to presume that this site has been used for Christian worship since at least the Roman times. There are bells in the tower which are rung on occasions. The parish has a population of about 120.
Puckington Parish now encompasses the farming community of South Braden, which at one time was an independent parish and the remains of its graveyard can still just be seen to the south of Braden Lane. Whilst one of our smaller parishes, Puckington does very well for itself. The church congregation is lively and enthusiastic and, over the past twelve months, has been working extremely hard to put its finances back on a firm footing. They have met with success and support from the village because they seek not just to raise enough money to keep going, but to improve the facilities that the church building offers, so that it can be used as a public place for the whole community.
